This unique New Colombo Plan study tour will pay particular attention to the psychosocial impacts of living in one of the most seismically active areas on Earth. Students will have the opportunity to learn from those at the front and centre of disaster response in Nepal. Visit the Office of National Society for Earthquake Technology-Nepal, Nepal’s Red Cross Society and the Himalayan Mountain Rescue Society.

Meet with teams at the Gurkha Welfare Trust Rehabilitation Centre and the NGO PLAN to examine the work they do to support the most vulnerable members of society in the wake of the devastating 2015 earthquake.

Throughout the tour, talks with staff and students from Kathmandu University, members of Newar communities and Buddhist Mmonks from the Kopan Monastery will provide the Nepalese perspective, supplying real insight to the role of spirituality in recovery and rehabilitation

Situated in the foothills of the Himalayas, Kathmandu Valley is a Unesco World Heritage site abundant in cultural riches and natural beauty. Witness the exquisite Newari architecture that characterises the temples, palaces and Durbar squares across the valley’s triad of cities; Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan. Experience the serene lakeside beauty of Pokhara, an idyllic counterbalance to the frenetic bustle of Kathmandu.
