Midwifery Study Tour in the Northern Territory (pre-2025 ACM National Conference in Darwin)

Explore the dramatically beautiful landscapes of the Northern Territory as you learn about the history and practice of midwifery in the region.

Hear about traditional practices, the culture and customs of First Nations people and rural and remote midwifery.

Explore Darwin, travel to remote Katherine and into stunning Kakadu before returning to Darwin at the end of the tour. Cruise through beautiful Nitmiluk Gorge, mingle in Mindil Markets, swim under spectacular waterfalls and in hot springs, and learn about local culture and history ranging from ancient times to the modern day.

The tour is led by the Chief Midwife of the Australian College of Midwives (ACM), Alison Weatherstone, and has been designed as a pre-congress tour for the 2025 ACM National Conference in Darwin (9-11 September 2025)

Explore Darwin on a bus tour. Visit The Royal Darwin Hospital to hear a talk giving the background to women’s, maternal and infant health in the Northern Territory and meet local midwives. Visit the Darrandirra Child and Family Centre and the MGP midwives. In the evening enjoy a welcome dinner with local midwives on the waterfront.

Drive to Katherine, visiting Litchfield National Park en route. Visit Florence Falls and Katherine Springs, with the option of a dip in each place, before taking part in the Katherine Art Trail with visits to local galleries.

Drive to spectacular Nitmiluk Gorge and explore this pristine wilderness on a cruise. Afterwards, visit Katherine Community Clinic and learn about women’s and maternal health in the region. Meet the Allied Health Team.

Drive into Kakadu National Park to Jabiru and take a cruise on the Yellow Water Billabong. Visit Warradjan Cultural Centre. Settle in to Anbinik Lodge before visiting the Red Lily Health at Jabiru. Meet the midwife at and learn about indigenous midwifery and nursing health services.

Cross Cahills Crossing and visit Gunbalanya, renowned for its Aboriginal art, in particular rock art and bark painting. It has a range of services, including a police station, school and a community arts centre, Injalak Arts. Drive to the spectacular UNESCO Heritage listed Ubirr Rock Art site in time for sunset before returning to the hotel.

Drive to Darwin via Humpty Doo and check in to your hotel. Learn about DJÄKAMIRR, a powerful documentary about the importance of birthing on country that examines Yolngu women’s culture, their midwifery traditions and their aspirations for maternity services. There will be a discussion group afterwards. Dinner and drinks in the Mindil Markets in a private area.
